Flirting with the Andes
DAY 21: PUERTO MADRYN.

Your breakfast today will be followed by an unforgettable experience: whale watching at Peninsula de Valdés

Puerto Madryn is the major tourist resort in the Patagonian coast and it is, as well,

the entrance gate to the Valdés Peninsula, where one of the most colossal and worldwide admired show is presented: southern right whale watching. Colonized by Welsh immigrants in 1865, is the gateway to the Valdes Peninsula and Punta Tombo, as well as a popular beach resort.

The primary attraction here is Peninsula Valdes, one of the most important wildlife reserves in Argentina. It is the breeding ground for sea lions, sea elephants, and

Southern Right whales (May - November), as well as a sanctuary for many species of marine birds. Another popular excursion from Puerto Madryn is Punta Tombo, one of the largest rookeries of Magellanic penguins in the world. The penguins are usually in the area from September to March.

You will cover approximately 221 miles touring the peninsula. The excursion includes a visit to Puerto Piramides, a small town surrounded by cliffs resembling pyramids, located on Nuevo Gulf. This is your opportunity to take an optional whale watching excursion by boat (available from July through November). Continue to Punta Delgada, an old lighthouse that has been turned into a hotel and marine reserve. The attraction here is the sea lion colony. At Caleta Valdes, a 20 mile area with viewpoints located along the cliffs overlooking the ocean, you will find the ideal habitat for sea elephants.

Return to Puerto Madryn in the late afternoon.

Accommodation at Hotel of your choice.
